Juan Perfumo Masnea (circa 1800–1860) was a distinguished luthier from Cádiz, renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship and significant contributions to the art of guitar making. Originally a carpenter by trade, Perfumo transitioned to luthiery and quickly gained recognition for his work. Over the course of his career, he moved his workshop several times, yet his guitars became celebrated not only in Spain but also internationally, with examples reaching as far as Argentina and Japan. Tragically, Perfumo’s life ended at sea on March 31, 1860.
Acquiring one of Perfumo’s guitars is both a privilege and a testament to his enduring legacy. This particular instrument, initially missing its label, was attributed to Perfumo during its meticulous restoration. The process, undertaken by Roger Sperline, uncovered traces of Perfumo’s distinctive 1853 label, and expert analysis confirmed its authenticity. Thanks to these efforts, this remarkable piece of history has been restored to its original splendor, preserving the legacy of a master luthier whose influence transcended borders. I am proud to share this beautifully restored guitar, a rare and tangible connection to Perfumo’s artistry.
