The Spanish luthier Paulino Bernabé Roman (born in 1960) is a world class maker as was his father, Paulino Bernabé Almendariz (1932-2007). Although he literally grew up in his father’s shop, formally began he working with his father in the early 1980s, and they worked side by side for more than twenty-five years. Like his father, Paulino Jr. is a not only a superb craftsman, but also an experimenter constantly seeking to improve both construction methods and various sound qualities of the guitar. This flamenco guitar is made in collaboration with qualified luthiers who work with him in his Madrid workshop. It is entirely handmade using the methods of traditional, individual luthiers, and then is hand varnished by M. Paredes, an expert at French polishing, with a degree from Madrid's School of Arts and Crafts. For this flamenco guitar, Paulino has chosen aged German spruce from the 1960s, and Spanish cypress that is at least 40 years old. The guitar is braced using the traditional system of bars and fan bracing. Its sound is rapid, brilliant, and very flamenco. The action is set up to meet the demands of modern flamenco guitarists, and is truly lively and very comfortable to play.
